Joule Creep Explained

Why your gun shoots harder with heavy BBs than the chrono says it should.

The short version

Chrono a gun at exactly 1.00 J on a 0.20g BB, switch to 0.40g, and — on many setups — it now fires at 1.2 to 1.4 J. Nothing changed in the gun. That gap is joule creep.

Why it happens

A BB accelerates only while pressurized air is pushing it down the barrel. A heavier BB accelerates more slowly, so it spends more time in the barrel, giving the air column more time to transfer energy into it. If the gun has air to spare — high-volume cylinder, HPA engine, long tight-bore barrel — the heavy BB leaves with more total energy.

A simple "same energy at every weight" model assumes the air charge is fully used regardless of BB weight. Real guns waste part of the charge with light BBs (the BB exits before the air is done expanding) and use more of it with heavy ones.

⚠️ If your field sets limits in joules on the BB you play with, chrono with that BB. A 350 FPS / 0.20g reading does not guarantee you're legal on 0.32g.

What is joule creep?
Joule creep is when a gun produces more energy with heavier BBs than its 0.20g chrono reading predicts. A gun reading 1.0 J on 0.20g can output 1.2–1.4 J on 0.40g BBs if it has a high-volume air system.
Which guns joule creep the most?
HPA engines and AEGs with long barrels and strong air volume. The heavier BB accelerates for longer in the barrel and absorbs more of the available air energy. Springers and gas pistols with small air volume creep far less.
Is joule creep cheating?
It's physics, not cheating — but knowingly exploiting it to exceed your field's energy limit is against the rules everywhere. More fields now chrono on the BB weight you actually play with to close the loophole.
